Game Review: Folklore

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 26, 2008, 8:59 PM
The best way I can explain this whole game is as a more mature version of Pokemon.

Now some of you may think that this makes the game not worth your time, but it does have some merit. The first is that it IS a more mature version of Pokemon, being that you have two charachters dealing with adult situations instead of some punk named Ass, I mean Ash, going out to catch em all... and most specifically you can't even catch em all on that stupid game. Some of them aren't always available.

That makes us to the next reason why this is better than Pokemon... cause you CAN catch em all.

This Game's version of the pocket monsters are called Folk, and the most powerful of them all are called the Folklore. Folklore actually need a strategy to beat them. Every Folk that you defeat can be upgraded, either by doing a task with them, feeding them something or absorbing a certain number of them. This in turn makes them stronger, adds an ability or two or make them take less magic to use them.

As for the story... well... the game's makers could've spent just a little bit more on this aspect. Not because the story sucked, it was kinda intreaguing to tell you the truth, but for a PS3 game to use a story board style way of telling you what was going on instead of voice acting is utter sacrildge for the game system. The boards aren't that long, the combat isn't that detailed to scrimp on the way the story is told.

It's a blue ray disk damn it... use the thing to its fullest!

The voice acting, when it arives, is quite nice though. The game takes place is ireland/wales/Great Brittain area, so the accents are spot on.

The next thing that irks me is the way they did the sprites when you're in the real world portion of the game. The girl, when she walks, walks with one hand permanantly curled closed to her face at the top of her chest. Though on the one hand, that's cute when a girl stands and smiles at you like that, on the other hand, when she does it ALL THE TIME, it strikes me that the poor girl has palsy.

The guy when he walks has this sort of hands in pocket bow-legged walk that looks like he's constantly pinching a loaf.

Their running animations are alot better though at least.

The entirety of this game's budget is apparently spent on the alternate world. Running animations, battle scenes, absorbtion of Folks and so one are many, many times more exciting than the real world.

Also, you can get quests from the bartender(s) in the real world and accomplish them in the alternate world.

Finally, through the playstation network (which is free, and is probably why xbox online is free too now) you can download upgrades to the game onto your PS3's harddrive. A couple of them are free... a few of them cost more money.

At the moment, this game is not worth the $49.99 price tag. Having played it, I would debate whether or not to buy it at the $29.99 value once it drops... but then at that point it would probably be a flip of the coin.

Graphically and sound quality (especially since I upgraded my TV and sound system to HD systems) this game has its moments, but after awhile... you just kinda sit there and start drooling.

Luckilly... unless it's a series that I know and love, I don't buy games, I rent them, so instead of being out $50 I'm out $8.

I rate this game 2 out of 5

And you all want to know what's sad? This is the best RPG on the PS3 currently. Man I can't wait for the slew of new games comming out for the PS3 soon...

Movie Review: Dark Knight

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 5, 2008, 6:13 PM
Important update:

I've heard something today from one of the techs at where I work... apparently the next villain will be the Ridler, and it will be played by none other than Johnny Depp. Can anyone verify this?

***End update***

Batman Dark Knight well deserves the praise it recieved earlier, that it is now the highest grossing movie on its first day of all time.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: This is how Batman should've been done a long, long time ago.

And the Joker... wow! Best supervillain of all time! The Joker made this movie I think. He did such a great job, it's too bad he died after this movie was over.

Finally is our friend, two face. CGI work on the second half of his face was just awesome, and I love movies that delve into the human psyche, and what happens in the mind of Harvy Dent, partially brought on by the Joker, is the third part of this movie that makes this movie so awesome.

The problem, though, is two fold:

1> Like with Spider Man and Doc Oc, you really can't top Batman versus the Joker
2> Even if they brign the joker back, it'll be very, very difficult to find a guy who did as good as this one.

All in all, yes, this is a movie that is well worth the price of the admition to go see it in the theatre.

And now for the top 5 moments of this movie.

5> Now watch, I'm going to make this pencil dissapear! *whack* look! It dissapeared.
4> Do you know how I got these scars?
3> Batmobile transform!
2> *flip* look at that, it's your lucky day. *flip* but not his.
1> Why so serious?

Now there are some other parts in here that I'd love to put into this wonderful, wonderful top five, but they'd ruin the movie for you.

Just be aware, you will experience the following:

The movie's over? Wow! That ending sucks!
Wait, the movie's not over? Well that's a little better.
The movie's still not over? Hey that's cool now. This movie's awsome!

Final review? 6 out of 5

Game review: F.E.A.R.

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 23, 2008, 6:59 PM
(The following is my actual game play experience)

AHHHHHHHHH!! Oh my god... what is that?!

Where the hell did that come from?!

Fucking flashlight... turn on... not now... AH FUCK!

AH GOD KILL IT! *BLAM BLAM* oh god... it's just a corpse they threw at me. *pant pant* *thump-thump*

*HUD flickers* what was that?!

FUCK! Get out of my head!

*Looks over shoulder in RL, looking for the girl in the red dress*

*Power fluctuates in game* *power fluctuates in real life making the lights flicker and the tv to snap and the cable box to reboot.

Ok... that was...

*thing falls off the shelf in game* *thing falls off the shelf in real life*

@.o

fuuuuck....!

*turns the game off*

(end game excerpt)

Ok... synopsis:

As you can all see, this game frightens me. It's not right that real life imitates such a game. I lost sleep that night.

But this is a suspensful game. I haven't played most resident evil games except for 4, but imagine that part in RE 1 where the dogs jump out at you through the window from the outside. Yeah... imagine that happening constantly through the whole game.

I haven't dared play Silent hill, but I hear that one will make you wet your pants too.

Not only do you have lotsa bad guys (a brigade) but you have some psychotic psychics to contend with... namely the girl in a red dress, and the commander for the soldiers.

Suspence is everywhere...

My favorite is this part:

In games like half life and others whenever you approach a ladder, you bend over turn around with your head down, and then you look up before descending the ladder. Well right when you look up... there's the fucking girl!

*screams like a little girl*

Ok... I'm a pansy. I admit it. This game frightens me. For you he-men and she-women, who like suspense, you may just shrug at this and think I'm a wuss... well... you're right.

I cannot give this an overall game play cause I can't stop focusing on the insanity.

As for suspensful insanity... I give this game a 6 out of 5. Yes... more than five

Masterful sound and lighting (even your HUD flickers with that tweaker light effect that keeps you lookin over your shoulder looking for the guy whose about to shiv ya... I mean looking over your shoulder in real life) The best way of playing this game for greatest level of suspense is with the lights off, a big screen, and isolate the sound with a pair of headphones... so that when that ghost whispers in your ear... you get the full effect :D

"She hates you"

"I was cut from her, I am a part of you."

"I'm going to kill you..."
